The compensation proposals were made mainly to people who suffered from myocarditis or pericarditis after vaccination against Covid.
The National Office for Compensation for Medical Accidents, Iatrogenic Affections and Nosocomial Infections (ONIAM) compensated 72 people who suffered from health problems after vaccination against Covid. Oniam is a public establishment whose mission is to organize the system of compensation – amicable, fast and free – for victims of medical accidents.
Compensation amounts have not been disclosed.
The information was revealed by François Toujas, president of the French Blood Establishment and candidate for the presidency of Oniam, before the Senate Social Affairs Committee. Of 241 cases investigated for post-Covid vaccination disorders, 30% received a favorable opinion on compensation on June 30. The compensation, the amounts of which have not been revealed, concern “mainly myocarditis or pericarditis”, specified François Toujas. Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle. Pericarditis is an inflammation of the membrane that surrounds the heart muscle.
Oniam received a total of 1,020 requests for amicable compensation for a health problem that arose after vaccination against Covid. Of these requests, 768 are still being examined. The health problems most often mentioned are pericarditis and myocarditis since they concern 211 cases. The other disorders listed are neurological disorders (196 cases, including 33 with facial paralysis), strokes/thromboses/pulmonary embolisms (129 cases), joint disorders (91 cases), hearing disorders (67 cases) and dermatological disorders (31 files). Before the Senate Social Affairs Committee, François Toujas declared that these files constituted “one of the essential subjects for Oniam” in the years to come.
A risk of cardiovascular side effects reported in several studies
The risk of cardiovascular side effects linked to anti-covid vaccination has been studied in several studies published in 2022. A study published in the journal The Lancet in June 2022 had identified a certain number of patients victims of a myocarditis or pericarditis after the second dose of vaccine. This study was carried out on a large cohort of 15,148,369 people aged 18 to 64 and vaccinated between December 2020 and December 2021 by the two mRNA vaccines manufactured by the Pfizer and Moderna laboratories. In total, 411 cases of myocarditis or pericarditis were detected, with a higher incidence among 18–25 year olds after a second dose.
Another study published in the journal JAMA in June 2022 indicated that inflammation of the heart were much more frequent following a Moderna vaccine than an injection of Pfizer vaccine, for the second dose (132 cases for a million second dose of Moderna vaccine, against 11 for Pfizer).
