Linn Grant shot the third round of 62 shots, 9 under par, and heading into the decisive fourth round is a full six strokes better than the five players who share second place.
The tournament was suspended due to rain when Linn Grant had gone seven holes and was four under par. When she re-entered the course, after almost four hours of weather interruption, she kept the flow in the game and continued with four more birdies and an eagle. The only blemish on the record came on the 16th hole with a bogey.
Near record round
With Linn Grant’s solid play, there was a chance she could become the second LPGA player ever to go a round under 60 strokes. The only one who managed it is Annika Sörenstam who did it in 2001 on the par-72 course Moon Valley in Phoenix.
After the round, Linn Grant was asked if she had a 59 round in mind.
— It was a spectator who told me that. He came up and asked if I thought I had a 59 in me. And then suddenly I thought: My God! But I tried not to focus on it at all, Linn Grant said.
Got nervous
She also said that she felt at the 13th hole that she was going a little too fast.
— I started to get nervous and felt that I had no control over the situation at all. So I held back a little. I don’t know if it was good or bad but I felt it was what I needed to do. I’m just glad I took control of the situation.
American Allisen Corpuz, who won the US Open at Pebble Beach last week, was in the same group as Linn Grant in the third round and was impressed by the Swede’s game.
— Linn really lit up today. I hope for the best for her tomorrow. No one will catch her if she plays like she did today, Allisen Corpuz said.
