With Watchmen, Zack Snyder has created an outstanding comic film adaptation that is particularly captivating on an audiovisual level. In gloomy pictures we dive into a alternate historyin which Richard Nixon becomes US President for a third time and masked vigilantes are up to mischief in New York.
Watchmen goes back to the comic book of the same name by Alan Moore, which is one of the seminal works of the superhero genre is applicable. Moore asks uncomfortable questions about the people who maintain “law and order” in masks and takes us on an existential journey that takes us all the way to Mars.

However, Snyder’s feature film is not the only film adaptation of the material. Four years ago, HBO released the series Watchmen, which is also based on Moore’s original, but couldn’t be further from the first film adaptation. Where Snyder takes over the individual comic panels almost one-to-one, Damon Lindelof has one with the Watchmen series created a wild remix.

Watchmen anno 2019 is a remake, recontextualization and sequel at the same time. The project can best be described as a reinvention of the Watchmen myth. Watchmen airs tonight, July 15, 2023 at 10:05 p.m. on ZDFneo. The TV version of the film (without credits) has a running time of 150 minutes and ends at 00:35. The repetition follows shortly afterwards at 01:50 a.m. There are also two other versions of the film: the Director’s Cut at 187 minutes and the Ultimate Cut at 215 minutes.
