Delay in introducing new EU rules on the marking of alarm and signal weapons means that Sweden is now being dragged before the EU’s court – despite the fact that a bill is finally underway.
The new rules would have already been introduced in January 2020, as the EU Commission has repeatedly pointed out for Sweden. The fact that the Swedish authorities sent over a draft law at the beginning of June is not enough to put the commission in a better mood either.
“Sweden’s total lack of transposition jeopardizes the directive’s goal of improving public safety throughout the EU,” states a press release on Friday.
The notice is included in this month’s list of cases where the Commission initiates or proceeds with complaints against member states. For Sweden, this time the commission also wants to see measures regarding the right to a lawyer, standard rules for dangers in the case of radioactivity and tax requirements on companies from the rest of the EU or EEA. In those cases, Sweden is now asked to respond within two months.
