After four episodes, the Marvel series Secret Invasion unpacks its biggest reveal yet. After several MCU characters have died (and partially returned) over the past few weeks, we learn in the latest chapter that James “Rhodey” Rhodes is in fact is a skull.
Shocking Marvel Reveal: Don Cheadle’s Rhodey is in Skrull in Secret Invasion
That’s a big deal because Rhodes isn’t just any character. He’s been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since Iron Man. He was first played by Terrence Howard before Don Cheadle took over the role in Iron Man 2. Cheadle has since starred in six other MCU films and is known as WarMachine become part of the Avengers.
In addition, Cheadle appeared in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier and lent Rhodes in the animated series What If…? his voice. Secret Invasion marks its most significant MCU appearance in a long time. And then it turns out that we’re actually dealing with a villain: Raava.

Raava, played by Nisha Aaliya, is the name of the female Skrull who created the Identity taken from Rhodes has. This is particularly dangerous because Rhodes, as a Colonel in the US Air Force, is a confidant of the President and is involved in important political decisions. The Skrull invasion is in full swing.
Secret Invasion: Since when is Rhodes a Skrull in the MCU?
Apart from the acute threat, one question above all arises: When did Raava take Rhodes’ identity? And linked to that: Have we ever met the real Rhodes? Secret Invasion doesn’t give a concrete answer. However, Marvel boss Kevin Feige hints that Raava has been wandering around longer than Rhodes.
Speaking to Marvel.com, Feige says:
We like the idea of fans going back and looking at some of Rhodey’s other performances and realizing that he wasn’t.

That doesn’t sound like Rhodes was a Skrull to begin with. Still, Feige makes it clear that we’ve been fooled by Raava in previous MCU stories. In addition to Secret Invasion, that could be on two upcoming projects have a big impact: Captain America: Brave New World and Armor Wars.
In the fourth Captain America film, Harrison Ford takes on the role of Thaddeus Ross, the to the new president becomes. That means something has to happen to the old one before that – he might die from Raava. Meanwhile, Armor Wars is the first MCU solo film starring Cheadle. But who will he play? The real Rhodes or the Skrull Rhodes?
