Red, blue, green… The color of lightsabers in Star Wars explained

Red blue green The color of lightsabers in Star Wars

The different colors of Star Wars lightsabers all have a very special meaning. We take stock.

The universe of Star Wars is teeming with details and mysteries that fans have fun dissecting and interpreting. One of the most notable is the color of the lightsabers, which vary significantly depending on the characters using them. They thus have their own meaning which makes it possible to better understand the symbols of the saga and the protagonists of the franchise.

The lightsabers blue, which are most common among Jedi, represent loyalty, courage, protection. No wonder mentors or heroes like Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker, Anakin Skywalker or Rey carry it. The lightsabers green are used by Jedi Consulars, particularly sensitive to the Force, who favored dialogue and mediation over violence. It represents experience and maturity, qualities that characterize Qui-Gon Jinn, Master Yoda, or Luke Skywalker in particular.

The lightsabers red come in opposition to the blues. They represent hatred, lust for power and anger, and more generally the dark side of the Force in which the antagonists and the Sith, like Darth Vader, Kylo Ren or Darth Maul and Darth Sidious, have sunk. The lightsaber purple is rarer, and for good reason: only Mace Windu uses it. While it represents the balance between the light (blue saber) and dark (red saber) side of the Force, it had no special meaning at the time of its creation: actor Samuel L. Jackson wanted it a lightsaber that stands out from the others and wears his favorite color, purple.

New colors and others still mysterious

Video game enthusiasts were able to discover lightsabers yellow In Jedi Power Battles And Knights of the Old Republic. They were originally created to provide more customization options for players. Subsequently, the lore of Star Wars clarified that these sabers were worn by Jedi Sentinels and Jedi Temple Guards, to symbolize the balance between wisdom and strength. In the cinema, the yellow lightsaber appears in The Rise of Skywalkerto show that Rey is starting a new Jedi order.

There are also lightsabers of other colors, but much rarer in the Star Wars Extended Universe. The lightsabers white, the most notable of which is wielded by Ahsoka Tano. This one, representing purity and neutrality, was created to symbolize the fact that this character did not belong to the Jedi or the Sith. The lightsaber blackthe exact meaning of which has never been developed, is used in the series The Mandalorian by Tarre Visla. There are also orange lightsabers, the meaning of which is also not (yet) developed.
