More intimate than its foray into Agatha Christie’s novel, this auto-fiction was nominated for an Oscar in several categories, including Best Picture and Best Direction. The French public there discovers the tensions between Protestants and Catholics in the district of Belfast in which a little Irish boy from the working class grew up.
In Belfast, Kenneth Branagh therefore recounts events that really happened in his childhood, in Northern Ireland torn by clashes between Protestants and Catholics in the 1960s. The director chose to immerse himself in this period of his life because confinement: “it triggered something in me that reminded me of the fragility of our existence, details Branagh in the columns of Vanity Fair. I felt forced and pushed to finally immerse myself in this period of my life. Buddy is thus a fictional double of the director, who also had to leave the Irish city with his family to take refuge in England when the conflicts between Protestants and nationalists broke out. The small story meets the big one.
