iOS, the operating system for iPhone, and iPadOS, its version for iPad, benefit from regular updates. Here’s how to install them on your devices to benefit from fixes, improvements and new features.
A week after the emergency release update 14.8, it’s now a major update for iOS and iPadOS that is coming out. Apple’s operating system for its mobile devices, available for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, brings some improvements that we suggest you discover in our iOS 15 article: update, compatible models, new features. It is also an opportunity to know the method of updating these devices. In fact, on iOS and iPadOS, switching to a new version of the system is not automatic. It must be triggered manually.
In addition, it is better to also take some precautions before starting, regardless of the update offered. First, make a backup of the device through iCloud or directly on a Mac, just to avoid any possible glitch during the operation. Then, prefer to update when the devices are connected to a WiFi network. For example, iOS 15 requires 3.4 GB of data to download. If your data plan is already well under way, you risk finding yourself dry. In addition, be aware that the battery of the device must display at least 50% charge. Also allow some time in front of you. The operation can take several tens of minutes between downloading the data, preparing, installing and verifying the process. Finally, no need to rush for an update as soon as it is offered by Apple’s servers. Even though the newer versions go through various phases of testing and public beta releases, they are not bug-free. It is generally advisable to wait a few days before updating your devices in order to let other users around the world dry up the plaster and escalate any problems encountered to Apple.
Even if the switch Automatic update is activated, iOS is not always very talkative when it comes to alerting you when an update is available. If this is the case, the system will simply download it overnight if the iPhone is charging and connected to a WiFi network. However, you will have to go and check yourself in Settings > General > Software update that your iPhone does not hide the presence of an upgrade.
