FT: Ukraine can expect confirmation from the summit on security guarantees and the continuation of aid

Ukraine, which is hoping for quick access to membership in the military alliance, is not getting what it hoped for from the NATO summit, but instead there is official support that is important for Ukraine, writes Financial Times magazine (FT).

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi, who is participating in the NATO summit, cannot leave empty-handed, because that would send the wrong message to Russia.

According to the newspaper, the plan is to officially confirm the security guarantees. The FT points out that although security guarantees are a separate matter from NATO membership, among the countries giving guarantees are the largest military powers of the military alliance, the USA, Britain, France and Germany.

According to preliminary estimates, the summit is also supposed to confirm the continuation of arms and training aid to Ukraine, as well as the sharing of intelligence information.

In order to strengthen Ukraine’s position, the NATO-Ukraine Commission is to be transformed into a council.

– I believe that Ukraine will become a member of this alliance and that Ukraine’s place is in NATO. NATO allies must decide when the time is right, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg tells FT.
