The government has officially launched an inquiry to look into the formation of a new hunting and game conservation authority. The investigation is supposed to result in proposals for changes to governance and division of responsibilities in the field of hunting and wildlife conservation.
Take advantage of different interests
The goal of the new authority would be to work for a functioning wildlife management that takes into account the needs and interests of, among other things, hunters, farmers and nature conservationists.
It also includes investigating whether the responsibility for weapons permits and permit verification for shooting ranges should be moved from the police to another authority.
“Hunting is important for Sweden”
– Hunting is important for Sweden. We have solid hunting traditions and many active and talented hunters who care for nature and game. It is also a matter of safety, where hunting contributes to reducing game damage to land and forest owners, increasing road safety and keeping the wolf population down. The decision today is a step on the way to securing good conditions for both hunting and game conservation, says Rural Affairs Minister Peter Kullgren in a press release.
Reported in January 2025
Appointed to lead the investigation is Susanna Löfgren, county councilor at the county board in Jämtland and former head of wildlife management issues at the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.
Opinions must be collected from, among others, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Police Authority, the Swedish Transport Agency and the county administrations. The results of the investigation must be reported by 31 January 2025 at the latest.
