Stove exhaust hood blamed in 25K apartment fire

No one was injured in a Chatham apartment fire that started in a stove-top exhaust hood July 5.

Firefighters from Chatham Stations No. 1 and No. 2 were dispatched to the fire on Adelaide Street South about 8:20 pm

Crews found smoke filling the apartment and moving into the hallway, Chatham-Kent Fire & Rescue said. “Firefighters advanced a hose line and located the fire in the kitchen of the unit. They were able to quickly extinguish the fire which started in the stove top exhaust hood.”

The apartment’s single occupant safely got out, and Victim Services and PAWS animal rescue worked with her to find accommodations for her and her cat until they’re able to return home.

Damage is estimated at $25,000.

Firefighters opened up the walls and ceilings to make sure the fire had not spread in the apartment building. Smoke was cleared from the building and all other tenants were able to return to their units.

Firefighters returned to the area July 6 to visit surrounding homes to check alarms and discuss fire safety.
