Jennifer Lawrence starred in the science fiction film Passengers. In an interview, she explains why she regrets being in the film – she was warned beforehand by the singer Adele.
Passengers is a science fiction film with romantic elements directed by Norwegian director Morten Tyldum. It was released in American cinemas in December 2016 and in Germany in January 2017.
The lead roles have been cast by Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt, who currently stars in Guardians of the Galaxy 3. Prior to that, Pratt lent his voice to Mario in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
In an interview with the New York Times, Jennifer Lawrence talks about her role in Passengers. When asked which film made her reconsider her choices, she named the sci-fi flick. The successful singer Adele even warned her beforehand.
“I think everyone’s had enough of me.”
What did Adele warn her about? “She was like, ‘I feel like space movies are the new vampire movies.’ I should have listened to her,” Lawrence said (via Variety). She often saw Passengers as a setback in her career.
The romantic relationship between the main characters and especially the behavior of the male protagonist is considered by many to be problematic. Because: James “Jim” Preston (Pratt) wakes Aurora Lane (Lawrence) early from her cold sleep and puts her in enormous danger (via 3DJuegos).
On Rotten Tomatoes, Passengers has a rating of just 30%. In her review, which is labeled “Top Critic,” user Anne Cohen writes, “Passengers takes a potentially interesting debate about consent and overlays it with cheesy romance and problematic sex” (via Rotten Tomatoes).
In particular, consent and toxic relationship patterns are topics that are often discussed in the “vampire movies” mentioned by Adele. On Moviepilot you can learn more about romance films that suffer from a curse.
But Jennifer Lawrence was also unhappy with her work. “I didn’t deliver the quality that I should have delivered,” she says in an interview (via Variety). “I think everyone’s had enough of me. I was fed up with myself. It just got to the point where I couldn’t do anything right,” Lawrence said.
The fact that she was nominated for the 2018 Golden Raspberry Award for her role in “Mother!” certainly didn’t make it any better for her feelings.
What consequences did she draw? Jennifer Lawrence got the feeling that fans were disappointed by her very existence. The actress took a break. In late 2021, she returned in her role as Kate Dibiasky in the black humor comedy Don’t Look Up.
