The protest of the citizens of the southern Ukrainian city spread to the world online over the weekend.
Russian troops said they captured the city of Berdyansk on Sunday. The city is located in southern Ukraine on the shores of the Sea of Azov.
Acting mayor Oleksandr Svidlo told Facebook that the city has been taken over by Russian soldiers. He urged people to stay safe.
However, some residents set out to protest against Russian forces on Monday. The video shows a group of people standing and shouting slogans like “Berdyansk belongs to Ukraine!”
The protest of Berdyansk residents against the Russians received a lot of support on social media. Attached is a tweet from the Belarusian NEXTA media about the demonstration.
Among others, a researcher at the Atlantic Council incubator in Belarus Hanna Liubakova reported on Twitter that Russian troops had to retreat from Berdyansk Square due to protest.
– If Putin thinks it is easy to take over Ukraine, he is wrong, Liubakova tweeted.
