Emojis have become essential for communication. According to the Unicode consortium, which manages their standardization, they are used by 92% of the online population! But which are the most used ones? The consortium has just established a ranking for the year 2021. Here are the first fifteen:
We can see that the “faces” are still popular, with a head crying for joy in first place, followed by the classic red heart. Next comes a rolling head laughing, followed by the inevitable thumbs-up.
The consortium had achieved a similar ranking in 2019, so it announced the changes in the top ten places.
The thumbs up ? goes up in the rankings, but so does the crying head?. The double heart disappears from the ranking, while the head with hearts in its eyes ? loses places between 2019 and 2021. However, we find many identical emojis between the two rankings, proof that users have not changed their habits .
In the top 200, the biggest changes are: the cake ? (from 113ᵉ place it goes up to 25ᵉ place), the ball ? (139 to 48) and the imploring head ? (97 to 14).
