The World Cup was to be held in Russia at the turn of August-September. Finland is not participating in the World Cup.
The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) took over the host of the World Championships in Volleyball from Russia. The competitions were to be held in several different Russian cities at the turn of August-September, but now new venues are being sought for them elsewhere.
According to the union’s website, the reason for the change is Russia’s attack on Ukraine last week. As recently as last week, the FIVB outlined that the Games would be held despite the Russian attack.
The FIVB said it was concerned about the escalation of the situation and the security of the Ukrainian people, so the federation no longer considered it able to continue the competition with Russia.
The FIVB has informed the Russian Volleyball Association and the World Cup organization.
– The FIVB is looking for an alternative host country or countries to ensure that the global volleyball family, including national federations, athletes, officials and fans, feel safe and proud to participate in a joyful and peaceful sporting festival.
Finland is not participating in the World Championships because the national team did not pass the qualifying screen. No actual qualifiers were held, but the participating countries were screened with rankings. The host of the race in Russia and the reigning world champion Poland had direct seats.
