The fire service advised local residents and eyewitnesses to stay out of the smoke and asked people to curb their curiosity and not come and watch so that the firefighters could do their job undisturbed. The latter worked well: the fire was reasonably under control shortly after it broke out. Shortly after 2 p.m., the fire brigade went to inspect the roof to see if the flames there had been extinguished.
