On July 3, 2013, Egypt’s first democratically elected president was overthrown in a military coup after only a year in power. His successor, Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, has since amended the Constitution to restrict freedoms and quell any opposition. Today, at least 60,000 political prisoners are incarcerated in Egypt, according to human rights NGOs.
