The third season of the fantasy series The Witcher will be released in two parts. Before it continues with issue 2 on Netflix on July 27, 2023, episode 5 leaves us with a cliffhanger that already makes the wait unbearable.
When and how things will continue for Geralt, Ciri and Yennefer and what the book and the first trailer for Part 2 already reveal about Henry Cavill’s final three episodes as a witch, we have summarized here for you. Warning, the following are spoilers for The Witcher Season 3 Part 1.
The Witcher Season 3: The end of episode 5 prepares the Thanedd coup for part 2
A big mystery that runs through the first five episodes of the season is that Ask about the mysterious client, who set Rience (Sam Woolf) on Ciri (Freya Allan) and “created” the fake Ciri through mind manipulation. After the eventful ball on Thanedd, we finally have the answer.

Vilgefortz in The Witcher
Geralt (Cavill) and Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) have to realize that Vilgefortz (Mahesh Jadu), the leader of the Brotherhood, is actually the wanted villain. How long he’s been playing the wrong game, what plans he’s following exactly and how powerful he really is as an opponent, we’ll hopefully find out in Part 2.
Shortly after the shocking realization, Geralt and Yennefer part ways and Episode 5 ends with a dramatic cliffhanger. Yennefer wants to find Tissaia (MyAnna Buring) and warn about Vilgefortz. Meanwhile, Geralt has to look for an escape route. Screams echo through the castle outside the bedchamber. The witcher is immediately surprised by Dijkstra (Graham McTavish), who holds a knife to his throat. Since Geralt has not chosen a side, he is now the enemy of the Redanian.
The plan to unite the north using all wizards seems to have failed. Even during the Thanedd Ball, opposing factions tried to win people over to their side in an approaching battle. And this one has come now. At the end of episode 5 the Thanedd coup begins, the true extent of which we won’t see until Part 2. One thing is certain, however, with a view to the novel: We are expecting an event that is not dissimilar to the Red Wedding from Game of Thrones.
Warning, book spoilers follow from here. If you want to start the next The Witcher episodes without prior knowledge, you better read no further.
The Witcher Season 3: The biggest events from the original book are yet to come
Netflix
The fight on Thanedd gets bloody
The Witcher season 3 adapts the plot of the novel The Age of Contempt *, the second volume of the Witcher saga by Andrzej Sapkowski. A look at the template already reveals how things will probably continue in the bombastic part 2. The season saves the biggest events from the book for the final three episodes. And some of them can already be seen in the first trailer.
The Thanedd coup will probably be seen directly in episode 6. In the bill, Dijkstra and his comrades have all Nilfgaard supporters and those who have not chosen a side arrested. But soon the situation escalated and a devastating battle broke out among the sorcerers. There are numerous fatalities.

Geralt’s great duel is imminent
For Geralt, the events of Thanedd end with an epic duel in which the Sorcerer vs. Mighty Vilgefortz. Here the magical villain shows for the first time what he’s really capable of. Yennefer is also separated from her witcher family in the course of the magic battle.
The most exciting part of Ciri’s story has not yet been told in Season 3. In the novel, she can escape the turmoil of battle through a portal and ends up in a vast desert. There begins a bitter fight for survival and a shared adventure with a unicorn.

Ciri meets a unicorn in the desert
Looking at the template, at the end of Season 3, we could also have a first appearance of the rat gang expect. We even got to see one member of this young gang of thieves, who Ciri joins at the end of The Age of Contempt, in episode 3: the outlaw Mistle (Christelle Elwin). Not only will the rat gang continue to be important in upcoming seasons, but they’re also leading an upcoming Netflix spin-off series that explores their backstory.
The most important question for part 2 cannot be answered even by the witcher template: will season 3 give us a good reason why Geralt will no longer look like Henry Cavill from season 4, but Liam Hemsworth? Or will the approaching reshuffle be completely ignored?
