After five days of silence on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Sudanese executive finally expressed its point of view on Monday.
Officially the Sudan merely promotes dialogue to resolve the crisis. Recall that the number 2 of the junta, General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemeti, on an official visit to Moscow on the first day of the war, had for his part mentioned ” the right from Russia to defend his people “. A position that had not been taken up by its leader, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhanwhich has remained silent since last week.
During Hemeti’s stay in Moscow, the Sudanese military junta was careful not to take a position on the war in Ukraine. The military and economic stakes for Sudan are indeed high, as the country has been so isolated since the October 25 coup.

” Sudan calls for a diplomatic solution »
But on Monday, after the return of its vice-president, the Sovereign Council met to discuss the situation collectively. And at the end of the meeting, his spokesperson, Salma Abdel-Jabbar, said that Sudan was therefore “ in favor of dialogue as a means of resolving the crisis between Russia and Ukraine “. ” Sudan calls for a diplomatic solution, she added, and supports ongoing efforts between the two countries. »
The Sudanese executive was put under pressure on Sunday by representatives of the European Union and the Troika, who publicly asked it to condemn Russian aggression during the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly which opened on Monday. And the demonstrators, who took to the streets once again on Monday, made no mistake about it, displaying placards and flags in support of Ukraine.
It is therefore a half-hearted position that Khartoum has taken, like the position illustrated by the abstention of Sudan, Monday in Geneva, at the request of an emergency meeting of the Human Rights Council the UN man.
