Disturbing serial killer thriller in which Scarlett Johansson was keen

Scarlett Johansson is one of the few actresses in Hollywood who can choose her roles — which doesn’t mean she can get any job she wants. The casting story surrounding infatuation proves this. The US film adaptation of the Swedish thriller novel by Stig Larsson is on TV today.

These are Verblendung’s TV dates

  • Verblendung runs on Saturday at 10 p.m. on ZDFNeo – i.e. without advertising and usually in HD

  • What is infatuation about?

David Fincher (Fight Club) filmed the US version of the first novel of the so-called Millennium trilogy. The focus is on the story of investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig), who is tasked with solving the mystery of the missing Harriet Vanger. She was kidnapped many years ago, but since then her uncle Henrik Vanger has received a dried flower for his birthday every year: the same gift that Harriet gave him at the time.

Together with the hacker Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara), Mikael Blomkvist investigates and uncovers a dark secret. Apparently they are dealing with a serial killer who has been around in the Swedish region for decades.

Disturbing thriller material was reportedly too much for Scarlett Johansson

Lisbeth Salander is the second main character of the film. The hacker has her own subplot in the thriller, in which she takes revenge on a rapist. It’s tough stuff. The character appears in the novel as inaccessible, extremely violent and ruthless described, but endowed with a great sense of justice. The film stands and falls with her casting. Jennifer Lawrence wanted the part but was too big for her. Scarlett Johansson also wanted Lisbeth Salander. At first glance, she fits the role well. Her alien character in sci-fi horror Under the Skin exudes a similar energy.

Director David Fincher turned her down even though her audition “greatThe Marvel star was too attractive for him. The entire reasoning was a bit more complex, as Johansson revealed years later:

It was like, I remember having conversations with David Fincher and he said, ‘You have to look like you don’t take care of yourself at all, emaciated, you’re fragile.’ I said, ‘I’ll do this, I can be that person.’ And he said: ‘No, you can’t.’

Rooney Mara ended up getting the part and doing her thing”perfect“, as Johansson found. In another film from the Millennium Universe, Claire Foy played Lisbeth Salander.
