Politicians and authorities have expressed that it is legal to burn the Koran in Sweden and referred to freedom of expression.
– Even though it is legal in Sweden, it is not something that the government thinks is respectful, Prime Minister Ulf Kristesson (M) has said.
In June, the police granted an application for a demonstration about the Koran outside a mosque in Stockholm at the same time as Muslims celebrated one of their most important holidays – Eid al-Adha. The person who applied to carry out the demonstration, Salwan Momika, wiped his shoes with pages from the Koran – and is said to have also burned some pages. An action which, among other things, led to the storming of the Swedish embassy in Iraq’s capital, Baghdad.
