Two people fell from the Stena Line passenger ship into the Baltic Sea in the afternoon, Swedish media reports. Newspaper Dagens Nyheterin according to the 7-year-old boy fell from the ship first, after which the mother jumped after her child.
The passenger ship Stena Spirit was on its way from Gdynia in Poland to Karlskrona on the southern coast of Sweden. It was about half way when the child fell into the sea. At that time, the ship was about 70 kilometers south of Öland.
The ship was stopped, and a large-scale rescue operation was carried out to search for people who had fallen into the water. The Maritime and Air Rescue Center received the emergency call at 16:19 Swedish time, i.e. 17:19 Finnish time.
– We have stopped the ship and sent a boat to look for these people, Stena Line’s press officer Stefan Elfström told Dagens Nyheter.
Helicopters from Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Poland participated in the rescue operation. It was also joined by four military coalition NATO ships and a US Coast Guard vessel that were on NATO exercises near the crash site.
About an hour and a half after the first alarm, the Maritime and Air Rescue Center reported that both those who had fallen had been picked up from the sea.
– The helicopter found one person, who was taken aboard immediately. Stena’s rescue boat found another person. A Nato helicopter lifted this out of the sea, communications officer Stefan Lang says the newspaper For Expressen.
