Teenager shot dead by police – large protests in France

Two motorcycle police officers stopped the 17-year-old, named Nahel M by the authorities, while he was driving a passenger car in the Paris suburb of Nanterre. A short time later, the teenager was shot dead.

“Has shaken the country”

French President Emmanuel Macron condemns the incident and expresses respect to the 17-year-old’s relatives. The incident has “shaken the whole country”, he says.

– A teenager was killed. It is inexplicable and unforgivable, Macron said during a visit to Marseille on Wednesday.

The incident has led to violent protests in Nanterre.

Second night of protests

In the suburbs, rubbish bins have been set on fire and fireworks have also been set off. Similar protests have also been reported from other suburbs and from the city of Dijon on Wednesday night.

In the Essonne department, south of Paris, a group of people set fire to a bus after first forcing all passengers off the bus, police said.

In the city of Toulouse in southern France, several cars were set on fire and emergency services and police who rushed out had stones thrown at them.

According to the police, 16 people have been arrested around the country.
