Salwan Momika, 36, burned a Koran outside Stockholm’s mosque.
Now Russian President Vladimir Putin reacts to the events in Stockholm.
– In other countries, they do not respect people’s religious feelings, he says according to the Russian state news agency Ria.
The police have drawn up several police reports after the Koran burning on Södermalm in Stockholm on Wednesday. 36-year-old Salwan Momika, who organized the public gathering, has been reported for incitement against a group of people and violation of the fire ban.
The decision to burn a Koran has received strong reactions from several quarters. Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson called the Koran burning “legal, but not appropriate”. In Turkey, both Erdogan’s spokesperson and the country’s foreign minister have called the Koran burning “abhorrent”.
“Know that they do things differently in other countries”
Now Russian President Vladimir Putin has also sent a passport to Sweden, reports the Russian state news agency Tass.
The statement was made in connection with a visit to a mosque in southwestern Russia. The Russian president says he respects the Koran and Islam.
– We know that they do it differently in other countries, they don’t respect people’s religious feelings and they also say it’s not a crime, he says according to Tass.
Vladimir Putin also talked about Koran burning being a crime in Russia, and that the country “will always follow that legislation.”
Vladimir Putin did not mention Sweden specifically.
