Lost in Translation director Sofia Coppola’s satirical zeitgeist film cast Watson in a role that seems like the polar opposite of Hermione Granger. However, the star fought over the film for a very specific reason.
Harry Potter star chose naughty role because of film’s director
The film’s plot is based on a Vanity Fair article about the true story of a group of teenagers who broke into several celebrity mansions in Los Angeles and stole various valuables. One of the gang leaders in the film is Nicki, played by Emma Watson, who enjoys indulging in drugs, alcohol, parties and plays offensively with her sexual charms.
In an interview with GQ in 2013, Watson spoke about not choosing The Bling Ring role to consciously throw herself into a completely different character than her well-known Harry Potter character. Instead, it was director Sofia Coppola who Watson was keen to work with:
[…] I actually fought for the role; I really wanted to play it. First of all, I was a big fan of Sofia [Coppola]. […] I met her, then found out she had a script, then read it, liked it, then found out she was interested in me for Nicki. I never chose the role, I chose the director. That’s really how I’ve approached all my career choices so far. […]
