AMD has announced that it will make a new investment of $135 million in Ireland. With this investment, while creating new employment, important steps will also be taken in R&D. The explanation given is as follows:
AMD announced plans to continue growing in Ireland with an investment of up to $135 million over four years. The investment aims to finance a variety of strategic R&D projects with the addition of up to 290 highly skilled engineering and research positions, as well as a wide range of additional support roles.
AMD invests $135 million in Ireland
This development was formally announced in Dublin by Simon Coveney TD, Minister for Business, Trade and Employment, and Ruth Cotter, Senior Vice President Marketing, Communications and Human Resources, AMD. The new investment is supported by the Irish government through IDA Ireland.
Simon Coveney TD, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, said: “I welcome AMD’s ambitious plans to expand its advanced R&D and engineering activities in Ireland. This significant investment will not only strengthen our emerging technology sector, but will also empower highly experienced professionals and engineering professionals alike. will create long-term career opportunities for new graduates from the disciplines.
The company’s plans to open up to 290 new positions and finance strategically important R&D projects demonstrate its confidence in Ireland’s supportive enterprise environment and infrastructure. “The Irish government, through IDA Ireland, is pleased to support this expansion, which further solidifies our commitment to develop a vibrant ecosystem for research, development and engineering.”
Ruth Cotter, Senior Vice President of Marketing, Communications and Human Resources, AMD, said: “AMD’s high-performance and adaptive computing solutions have played an increasingly important role in shaping the future of computing today, from cloud and computing to communications and intelligent edge. Ireland has become one of Europe’s leading R&D centers developing adaptive computing solutions leveraging a strong and highly skilled workforce.
We are committed to continuing to both foster innovation in Ireland and support the European semiconductor ecosystem by further investing and expanding our presence in Dublin and Cork. “Through this investment, our R&D teams in Ireland will design innovative high-performance and adaptive computing engines to accelerate data centre, networking, 6G communications and embedded solutions and take a leadership position in AI.”
Prior to the acquisition of Xilinx by AMD in 2022, Xilinx had variously partnered with IDA Ireland to advance semiconductor innovation in Ireland. Most recently in 2017, Xilinx announced a $40 million investment to expand its research, development and engineering activities and hire more than 100 new qualified employees.
“This investment will contribute to Ireland’s position as a global technology leader as we continue to push the boundaries of what is possible,” said Michael Lohan, CEO of IDA Ireland. This expansion further strengthens the company’s presence as a semiconductor innovation center in Ireland and places Ireland at the center of AMD’s European research and engineering operations. “IDA Ireland has been proud to support AMD and formerly Xilinx for nearly three decades and is committed to supporting scale investments that have a positive impact on Europe’s semiconductor industry.”
The Irish facility was originally established in 1994 as the first purpose-built Xilinx facility outside the US and began operations a year later with a focus on manufacturing, operations support, engineering and management services. Since the acquisition of Xilinx, Ireland is home to one of the largest AMD R&D facilities in Europe, with a strong track record of delivering products with significant commercial success, such as the AMD Zynq™ UltraScale+™ RFSoC family of semiconductors.
