NATO calls an extra meeting

A specially convened meeting is to speed up Sweden’s NATO process.
Foreign ministers from Sweden, Finland and Turkey will meet in Brussels before the summit, reports TT.
– This is significant, says TV4 Nyheternas Ritva Rönnberg.

NATO is calling a new meeting in Brussels next week to discuss Sweden’s application. The settlement was made in a telephone conversation between NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan yesterday.

– We agreed to call a high-level meeting in Brussels before the summit. The intention is to make progress towards the completion of Sweden’s entry into NATO, says Stoltenberg at a press conference in Lithuania.

“Will further strengthen security”

The announcement came in connection with Stoltenberg’s visit to Lithuania, where he is preparing for the big summit in Vilnius on July 11 and 12.

– It has been incredibly important for all NATO countries, except Turkey, to ensure that Sweden becomes a member before the Vilnius meeting. It has been a sort of magical imaginable limit, says Ritva Rönnberg.

At the press conference, Stoltenberg once again expressed his desire to welcome Sweden into NATO.

– The entry of Finland and soon also Sweden will further strengthen security in the Baltics, emphasizes Stoltenberg.

Sweden, Finland, Turkey and NATO last met at official level in Ankara on 14 June.
