Why you can look forward to the new episodes despite Henry Cavill’s farewell

Why should I even watch The Witcher anymore? Some of you are probably asking yourself this question. After all, Season 3 of Netflix’s fantasy epic, which starts June 27, will be the last to star Henry Cavill. After that, Liam Hemsworth will play the witcher Geralt of Rivia.

For many, Henry Cavill’s exit from The Witcher is like a black storm cloud hovering over the launch of the new episodes. There are compelling reasons to really look forward to Season 3. Namely, in Andrzej Sapkowski’s literary original there is three big highlight momentswhich (hopefully) made it into the series and should already be a source of anticipation.

Warning, this article contains book spoilers on the novel The Age of Contempt, which serves as a template for Season 3, and revelations from later volumes. If you want to start the new The Witcher episodes without prior knowledge, you better read no further.

Reason 1: Season 3 brings us The Red Wedding of the Witcher universe

Netflix

Geralt and Yennefer at the fateful feast

Game of Thrones’ Red Wedding is still one of the most shocking series moments of all time. Several main characters were murdered in one fell swoop. Their deaths turned the power structure of Westeros upside down. A similar moment could now await us in The Witcher Season 3. Not in the form of a wedding, but as Meet the most powerful mages of the continent.

In the original novel, several conflicts that have been building up since the beginning of the saga erupt in a dramatic climax on the island of Thanedd. A true carnage is unleashed, which violently catapulted the lives of all the main characters into new directions and some important figures even cost their lives.

After the so-called Thaned coup, nothing is the same as before in the book on the continent. For Henry Cavill’s Geralt, this event could be so traumatic that he is literally not himself afterwards. How does the series implement the theme? You have to watch it yourself on Netflix.

Reason 2: The Witcher shocks with incest story that makes Game of Thrones green with envy

Netflix

Emhyr van Emreis has bad plans for his daughter

Ciri (Freya Allan) will be hunted by numerous factions in Season 3 of The Witcher. Including almost every kingdom that the heir to the throne Cintras wants to abuse for political purposes and gaining power for herself. But one person has completely different and more perfidious motives: Ciri’s biological father, the Nilfgaardian Emperor.

So far, the Netflix series has been telling us why Kaiser Emhyr van Emreis (Bart Edwards) is so keen to get his hands on Ciri. The template for the Netflix series revealed: he wants her marry and get pregnant. In the novel, however, it only becomes clear much later that the emperor is actually Ciri’s father.

Incest in fantasy series has been hotly debated in pop culture in the wake of Game of Thrones and its prequel House of the Dragon. The HBO hits attempted to justify their incestuous unions between siblings, uncles, aunts, nephews, and nieces through romantic feelings. However, The Witcher goes in a different direction with Emhyr’s incest intentions and makes it clear: This is not romantic, but maximally disturbing. How do you think Ciri and Geralt will react to this revelation on the show?

Reason 3: Netflix, give me a unicorn!

Netflix

Ciri will soon have an animal companion

The book template for season 3 has a special surprise in store quite late in the story. After the big Thanedd coup, Ciri ends up in a desert where she has to fight to survive on her own. But soon she gets animal company. She meets a unicorn in the sandy expanse of the Korath Desert!

This isn’t some silly fantasy horse, it’s a multiverse unicorn. In the world of The Witcher, these creatures are multidimensional beings – and a more than worthy compensation for Geralt’s boring roach substitute. Now we just have to keep our fingers crossed that The Witcher season 3 will do us too the unicorn foal Ihuarraquax not withheld.
