There are films where the confirmation is renewed every few years: Yes, we are working on the sequel. Yes, everyone involved wants it. No, there is no start of shooting yet. A brilliant representative of this genus: Edge of Tomorrow. The sci-fi blockbuster starring Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise was released in cinemas in 2014. Emily Blunt recently gave an update that, upon closer inspection, reveals a lot about development hell.
Is Edge of Tomorrow 2 still coming? That’s what Emily Blunt says about it
In Edge of Tomorrow, Tom Cruise’s character relives the same day over and over again, and that too on an alien battlefield. He teams up with a super soldier played by Emily Blunt and the two devise a plan to stop the alien invasion.
Edge of Tomorrow made it into two top lists from the Moviepilot editorial team:
The last water level for the sci-fi sequel dates back to 2019. At that time, the actually reliable Hollywood Reporter reported that Edge of Tomorrow 2 was officially in the works. However, Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt had not yet signed for the film. Did the plans fail? In any case, four years later, nothing has come of the supposedly watertight project. Why not Emily Blunt?
In an interview with Deadline, the actress spoke about her acclaimed series The English. The conversation eventually spilled over to Edge of Tomorrow when the performer was asked about her prognosis for the sequel. The answer: She would love to shoot another part. However, she does not know when or how this will happen.

Shortly thereafter, however, she becomes more specific when it comes to the reasons for the impasse: Apparently, the scripts have simply been too boring so far. Blunt says:
It’s like we need to create something as ambitious as the first part. How much more can you do with the concept of repeating a day? What is the new construct?
That’s a valid question. Edge of Tomorrow thrives on the creative use of the time loop concept. And the story comes to a meaningful end in the film. If you want to continue from here, you have to think carefully about how this is going to happen. Tom Cruise in particular is known for only throwing himself into projects when the conditions are perfect and failure is impossible.
So if you have an idea on how to continue Edge of Tomorrow in a meaningful way, be sure to send it to director Doug Liman, Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise. Then things might finally get moving.
