The violence took place on Tuesday in a prison about 25 kilometers north of the capital Tegucigalpa on Tuesday.
According to several reports, members of a gang broke into a part of the prison where women of a rival gang lived. There, the inmates had been shot at, attacked with machetes and the attackers set fire to the place.
That part of the prison was “completely destroyed” in the fire, according to Delma Ordonez, who represents the inmates’ relatives.
The prison has room for around 900 prisoners.
Gangs are largely in control of Honduran prisons, setting their own rules and selling banned goods.
