As Variety reports, The Flash has in the so-called domestic market (USA and Canada) over the first weekend after launch only grossed $55 million. That puts him behind the $67 million paid by DC predecessor Black Adam, who ended up giving Dwayne Johnson one of the most painful flops of his career.
It falls particularly the hefty budget of about $200 million pure production costs. For comparison, even the similarly priced Marvel flop Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania grossed 135 million in its first weekend (via The Numbers).
There are many possible reasons for the slow start weekend. Perhaps the controversy surrounding The Flash star Ezra Miller has put many fans off. The reviews of the film are largely positive, but not enthusiastic (via Metacritic ). Previous flops like Thor 4: Love and Thunder, Ant-Man 3 and Shazam 2: Fury of the Gods also indicate a certain superhero-tiredness in the audience.
Is The Flash doomed?
Weekly box office returns have traditionally dropped rapidly for The Flash-style superhero blockbusters in the weeks following launch. As the Variety report rightly points out, there are examples where a superhero film has gotten off to a bad start and has become a success. Often it doesn’t happen. We’re keeping our fingers crossed, though the signs are bad.
