This is how you get – and use – a digital ID card

Tired of carrying a heavy wallet with you everywhere?
It has been possible to pay with your mobile phone since before – now you can also identify yourself with a digital ID card instead of a physical one.

On Monday, Bank-id will launch a digital ID card in the mobile phone, which will now be able to be used instead of a physical card.

– We want to offer flexible and, above all, secure identification in a physical environment. It is a logical step in development to further simplify everyday life for our users, says Petter Dahl, e-identification expert at Bank-id, in a press release.

The service’s users now have the choice of whether they want to use Bank-id with or without the new function.

To activate the digital ID card, a valid passport or national ID card is required, which is scanned using a mobile phone. However, you cannot activate your new digital ID card with a regular driver’s license.

Follow these steps to get your digital card:

1. Start the Bank-id app and click on the ID card tab – where you get the choice “Activate ID card”.

2. Read and accept the terms of use – signed with your mobile bank ID.

3. Select an ID document (national ID card or passport) and take a photo of it in the app.

4. Blip the ID document with your phone. This requires that your smartphone is equipped with a so-called NFC reader, which the vast majority of modern phones are.

Up to the company to accept

If you have followed the steps above, then just use your new card – it is then up to companies and authorities to choose whether they accept a digital identification or not.

Among others, DHL and Postnord have already stated that they will use the new technology.

Whoever checks your digital ID, for example at the pub or when you pick up packages, scans your QR code or taps the screen to see that it is genuine. The person can also compare the image and information with your appearance – just like with a regular ID card.
