A woman who sought emergency care at the hospital in Lund had life-threatening side effects due to a cortisone treatment in conjunction with an unusual metabolic disease. The woman later died and now Region Skåne reports the case to the Inspectorate for Care and Care (Ivo) according to lex Maria.
The woman came to the emergency room with new convulsions and an MRI scan of the brain showed a tumor and swelling. To reduce the swelling, the patient received a dose of cortisone and an operation was planned, writes Region Skåne on its website.
However, because the woman suffered from an unusual metabolic disease, there were instructions in her medical record when seeking emergency medical care. A specialist should be consulted when inserting certain drugs, but this was overlooked when a high dose of cortisone was inserted. The cortisone treatment in combination with the underlying disease led to life-threatening side effects and the patient died.
