Norrköping is the year’s best climate adaptation municipality, followed by Boden and Lomma, according to the survey carried out by the IVL Swedish Environmental Institute and Swedish Insurance.
Political decisions and allocated resources for climate-adapted work seem to be the common denominator for the municipalities at the top. But more than half of the municipalities in the survey do not reach half of the possible points.
53 municipalities received below 10 points in the survey, out of a total of 33, which shows that they have barely started their climate work.
“We see above all that small municipalities are lagging behind with climate adaptation work. It is probably an effect of the fact that they have little resources and limited competence to pursue these issues,” says Staffan Moberg at Swedish Insurance in a press release.
In the study, it was also seen that the rate of increase previously seen in the municipalities’ climate adaptation work has stopped.
“It is worrying that it is slowing down, on the contrary, the pace needs to increase. Even if some municipalities are more vulnerable than others, the whole country will be affected by climate change and all municipalities need to implement measures,” says Magnus Hennlock at the IVL Swedish Environmental Institute.
