At half past two on Wednesday, the police were called to the National Museum in central Stockholm. Two people were arrested on the spot, suspected of serious damage.
– They have been inside a museum and held their hands against a painting, says police spokesperson Daniel Wikdahl to TV4 Nyheterna.
Climate activists from the group Restore wetlands are behind the damage.
– A nurse and a nursing student have stuck to the protective glass of a coin board and left red fingerprints on the glass, says Roxy Farhat, spokesperson for the group.
Painting by Monet
The painting in question was a work of art by Monet in the exhibition The Garden, the National Museum said in a statement.
– We naturally distance ourselves from actions where art or cultural heritage risks being damaged. Cultural heritage has great symbolic value and it is unacceptable to attack or destroy it, regardless of the purpose, says Per Hedström, Acting Superintendent at the National Museum in a press release.
According to the National Museum, the two people must have thrown paint on a work of art and then glued themselves to the frame.
The painting will now be examined by the museum’s conservators to see if any damage has occurred.
