A child in municipal housing in Jämtland County was forced to sleep locked in a wooden cage at night for several years, local media reports.

The cage was discovered in connection with the municipality’s assistance unit making a study visit to the residence, and is described according to a report as wooden studs “from floor to ceiling”.

According to the municipality – which has now investigated the child’s sleeping situation – the wooden cage previously lacked gates. However, at the request of the child’s parents, gates were installed so that the child would not get up at night and thus sleep better.

The municipality states that the confinement is an unauthorized coercive measure, and the matter has now been reported to the Inspectorate for Care and Care, according to lex Sarah. The gates have now been removed and the child is instead accompanied by awake staff at night.
