Meteorologists are worried this summer will be much less beautiful

The weather forecast for the summer of 2023 announces surprises according to several European models, particularly in areas popular for holidays.

Sun and heat lovers may be disappointed, but the summer of 2023 is shaping up to be rather unexpected in the Mediterranean according to weather forecasts and weather models. The European ECMWF center is carrying out modeling month after month and it clearly indicates a rainy trend over a large part of Europe until the end of June, particularly over the south of France and the Mediterranean coast. But the rest of the summer could also be less sunny than the last few years…

In Italy, the famous meteorologist Guido Guidi speaking on RAI has already given similar forecasts for the start of summer for the whole of the Mediterranean area, which is the favorite holiday destinations. “We have a very visible signal of a rainfall anomaly which lasts most of June, and a temperature anomaly, induced by more cloudiness and precipitation, and less sunshine”, he slipped recently before detail the first forecasts for the rest of the “beautiful season”.

“Late heat”, larger thunderstorms?

“Beware, however, of the subsequent trend: the seasonal model sees a summer quarter (June, July and August) instead” with higher than normal temperatures: “this means that if June will be cool and then summer will be hot , this heat should be late, between July and August, so as to recover the freshness anomalies of June”, he assures. The first holidaymakers on the Mediterranean rim could therefore inherit less summery and favorable weather while avoiding extreme heat.

The famous meteorologist warns that these signals remain difficult to interpret so far in advance. But his observations agree with those of many European meteorologists. In France, the models thus indicate that the southern part of France should be more exposed to this instability with higher rainfall than in recent years, especially around reliefs such as the Alps or the Pyrenees.

The risk of thunderstorms would thus be greater than in previous summers. With one advantage: the heat waves should be shorter than expected, with a lower risk of a heat wave at the start of summer. Get ready to enjoy the days of good weather as soon as they present themselves. This summer will probably be rainier than expected…
