Fuel prices rose in the country after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced on May 29 that he would lift the subsidy on petroleum products.
Fuel prices, which were sold for 185 naira per liter (about $ 0.40), had increased to 488-557 naira ($ 1.06-1.21).
Strike Suspended
Labor unions in Nigeria had given until 7 June to return to the old fuel prices, otherwise they announced that they would start a nationwide strike. However, the unions suspended the strike after meeting with government officials.
FUEL SUBSCRIPTION IN NIGERIA
Although Nigeria is Africa’s second largest oil producer, it imports almost all of its fuel oil due to the lack of refineries.
In October 2000, the government introduced the fuel subsidy by providing direct financial support to oil companies.
