Pope Francis hospitalized for surgery

Pope Francis hospitalized for surgery

Pope Francesco had an intestinal surgery in July 2021 and a 33 cm section of his large intestine was removed.

In a statement last January, the Pope said that the troubles that caused this surgery were back.

EXPLANATION FROM THE VATICAN

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said this morning that it was decided that the Pope would be operated on because of “recurring, painful and worsening” symptoms.

Papa Francesco went to Gemelli Polyclinic for controls yesterday.

Returning to the Vatican after this 40-minute visit, the Pope conducted the general acceptance ceremony this morning.

It was announced that the Pope went to the hospital after this ceremony.

The Pope was also hospitalized in Gemelli last March due to a respiratory infection.

Pope Francis frequently uses a wheelchair and cane due to knee discomfort.

He refused to have surgery on his knee because he was suffering from the side effects of general anesthesia after bowel surgery in 2021.

CAN REsign

Pope Francis, who is completing his 10th year in office this year, does not rule out the possibility of resigning if his health does not allow.

The first person to break the tradition of popes to stay in office until their death in modern times was the previous Pope Benedict XVI, who resigned in 2013.

Francesco also said in a statement at the end of last year that he had prepared his resignation letter to be used if he had to leave this post for medical reasons.
