After her Marvel end, Scarlett Johansson wants to return to smaller or bolder roles. Her most radical achievement to date but she delivered it back in 2013 in the overlooked sci-fi masterpiece Under the Skin. If you don’t know Jonathan Glazer’s film yet, you should definitely discover it. It’s not for nothing that we chose the work as number 4 of our 100 favorite films of the last decade.
Under the Skin, Scarlett Johansson transforms into a seductive alien
From the film’s highly enigmatic plot, it can be seen that the Marvel star plays an alien disguised as Johansson. It drives a van through Glasgow, Scotland, to seduce willing men, lure them into the vehicle and finally in pitch-black non-spaces.
With strange images and a brilliant score by Mica Levi, Glazer’s film is reminiscent of David Lynch’s surreal nightmare visions. With his style, the director succeeds in making us perceive our world in a completely new light through extraterrestrial eyes.
Scarlett Johansson’s under the skin performance is impressive
The film is becoming more and more developed bitter parable about the human rejection of the stranger as well as the sci-fi symbol of isolation and loneliness.
The highlight, however, is clearly Johansson as an alien mantis in species style. Johansson plays her most disturbing role of all time with full body use and facial expressions that perfectly convey the essence of her character.
What movie will Scarlett Johansson be in next?
From June 15, 2023 you can look forward to Wes Anderson’s new film Asteroid City. Scarlett Johansson also plays a part in the usual mega cast with stars such as Jason Schwartzman, Tom Hanks, Margot Robbie, Steve Carell, Maya Hawke and Liev Schreiber.
