Tom Cruise is reportedly furious with Inception creator Christopher Nolan

The saviors of the cinema are probably heading for a major conflict among themselves. In the blockbuster month of July we can look forward to both the action hit Mission: Impossible 7 – Dead Reckoning Part One and Christopher Nolan’s new atomic bomb epic Oppenheimer.

Since both films start shortly after each other, it will be a Duel for the biggest screens give. This is said to have provoked action star Tom Cruise into an angry mission in real life.

Tom Cruise reportedly doesn’t want to sell IMAX screens to Christopher Nolan

Industry insider Matthew Belloni writes about Cruise’s alleged “anger” at Oppenheimer’s release plans in his Puck newsletter (via IndieWire). It’s specifically about Nolan’s film looking to take over as many IMAX theaters in the week after Mission: Impossible 7 launches.

Since the star is once again relying on breathtaking stunts for the latest part of the action series, which are particularly effective on the extra large screen (and thus sell even more expensive cinema tickets), Cruise is said to have now started a personal campaign.

Cruise is said to be holding face-to-face meetings for competing studio executives and cinema executives to convince them live of the quality of his new action blockbuster. He wants to achieve that Mission: Impossible 7 longer and more frequently than Oppenheimer in IMAX halls will be shown.

Christopher Nolan might not be too happy about that either. The director is known for his technical perfectionism and his love of the massive cinema format. It is not for nothing that he has large parts of his blockbusters filmed with the heavy IMAX cameras in order to be able to present them to an audience in the best possible quality.

Both Universal and Paramount, the studios behind Oppenheimer and Mission: Impossible 7, have not commented on IndieWire’s request.

When will Mission: Impossible 7 and Oppenheimer hit theaters?

From the July 13, 2023 is Mission: Impossible 7 with Tom Cruise in German cinemas. Nolan’s Oppenheimer starts the following week on July 20, 2023.
