As Total Film reports, body doubles were used for the actors in the skydiving sequences for insurance reasons. With one exception: Swayze jumped out of the plane himself 55 times during the shoot, to make the sequences look even more authentic.
“When I thought of sky diving as simply a ballet in the air, I found it pretty easy“, explained the professionally trained dancer. The film benefited greatly from his courage. The sequences in the air still inspire many fans 32 years after the cinema release.
