This week, the police revealed that they had made new findings in the Madeleine McCann investigation.
Leif GW Persson does not believe that the findings can provide an answer to the riddle of what actually happened 16 years ago.
– I actually think that this matter is over, he says in Nyhetsmorgon.
This week, police completed the new search operation at a pond in southern Portugal in the Madeleine McCann case. A water reservoir near the Algarve coast was searched again following a request by German police.
German and British police revealed after the operation that they had made new findings in connection with the site, without going into further details.
Leif GW Persson does not believe that the new findings will provide any answers to what happened to Madeleine McCann 16 years ago.
– I actually think that this matter is over. You don’t usually cope with disappearances this old, he says in Nyhetsmorgon.
“The likely scenario”
He also does not believe that there is any chance that Madeleine McCann, who would have turned 20 in May, is still alive.
– She most likely died in connection with the disappearance and then the body was disposed of. That is the likely scenario.
German police have singled out a man as the main suspect in the case. The man is serving a prison sentence after raping a 72-year-old woman in the same area where Madeleine McCann disappeared. He has not been charged with any crime related to the girl’s disappearance.
Leif GW Persson says he has a theory about what happened, and does not believe the man singled out by German police has anything to do with the case.
– I don’t think so, he says.
I don’t think the riddle will get an answer
– It is usually the case that the person behind the disappearance is within their own family or within the immediate social or geographical area.
The criminologist and author does not believe there will be any answers to what happened to Madeleine McCann.
– I don’t think we will ever get that.
