Civilization 6 has a new favorite leader and he defeated Abraham Lincoln

Civilization 6, the strategy hit on Steam, has added 12 new leaders since November 2022. And it seems like in real life: China is ahead and overtaking the USA. We look at the new fan favorite: Yongle.

What is the role of leaders in Civilization 6?

  • Each civilization in Civilization 6 has special bonuses and traits. They are therefore suitable for different playstyles and decide what kind of victory you aim for. People like to build miracles with the Chinese, with the Dutch they concentrate on trade, as Macedonians they want to conquer the world.
  • The leaders determined the rest of the rules by which to play Civilization 6. Because they in turn bring their own touch and bonus skills to the game: Germany plays differently, depending on whether you play as Barbarossa or as the fairytale castle king Ludwig II, who the game rewards for completely meaningless laying the foundations for miracles in the landscape to pose that one never finishes.
  • Since the 2016 release, more and more leaders have been coming to Civilzation 6, and some civs now have multiple leaders to choose from, allowing for different playstyles. There are even “alternate versions” of some leaders.

Yongle can quickly carve out cities and grow an empire

Why is Yongle so strong? As early as January 2023, right after the release, the community agreed: “Yongle belongs in the S-Tier” or “Yongle is simply OP”:

Yongle gives its cities access to 3 special projects that convert 50% of their production into food or faith, or 100% of their production into gold. When cities reach a population size of 10, they also produce gold, science and culture for every additional citizen.

It was already said on reddit in January. Yongle has crazy potential:

  • You can either play it high (few, but big cities) or wide (many, but small cities)
  • First you can found as many cities as possible and let them grow extremely quickly with the food bonus
  • Once they’re big, the bonuses really hit the spot
  • Apparently, Civ 6 players love that they have the flexibility to use Yongle to prioritize food, faith, or gold depending on the situation. Then once you’ve built a huge empire with big cities and see the values explode, it feels fantastic:
