The apartment building where only lesbians are allowed to live

The new sanctuary for lesbian women will be completed in 2025 the apartment building that is the only one of its kind.
Only women who love women are allowed to live here, and the waiting list is long.

Just a stone’s throw from the famous clock tower of Berlin’s town hall, the eight-story apartment building will stand. At first glance, the architects’ illustration of the dazzling property looks like a new build that could have been taken from a municipal detailed plan from Sollentuna or Gävle. But appearances are deceiving, because this German house is not like other buildings – it is lesbian. Or well, at least those who will live there.

A safe and discrimination-free accommodation

The waiting list to rent an apartment here is long, because only women who love women can live here. The idea is that lesbian and queer women should have access to a life in a safe living environment, free from the discrimination that many LGBTQI people have to endure in everyday life.

The contractor behind the building, Wohnungsbaugesellschaft Mitte, writes in a press release that the building will house a cafe, event spaces and consultation rooms.

Together, the accommodation and facilities will form a queer cultural center with the aim of making visible the culture of the lesbian and queer community.

According to the association behind the project, Rad und Tat Frauenkultur, the women can move into their new apartments in October 2025. The rents will also be low, from SEK 78 per square meter, as the project has received government subsidies.
