I confess that Gerard Butler’s countless action films tend to blur in my head. Whether he’s saving the world (Geostorm), the president (Olympus Has Fallen 1-3, Hunter Killer), or his family (Chase, Greenland), he’s usually the competent warhorse who acts heroically for the good of all. So I didn’t have high expectations of his new action outing Plans, which came to the cinemas at the beginning of February and now, 4 months later, is already available in the stream on Sky/WOW *. But I was pleasantly surprised.
Now streaming: Gerard Butler delivers impressive action cinema in Plane
As the unmistakable (almost parodic) title suggests, Gerard Butler’s latest film takes place on board an airplane. He embodies the pilot Brodie Torrance, whose Passenger plane forced to make an emergency landing becomes. Unfortunately, the site of his spectacular rescue is a war zone on an island controlled by militias.
And the hostile rebels in Plane see the people who have unexpectedly fallen from the sky primarily as hostages who are suitable for a ransom demand – or who have to be killed. In order to call for help, Torrance must team up with an inmate he also transported on board: murderer Louis Gaspare (Mike Colter).

Plan with Gerard Butler and Mike Colter
The action thriller Plane by director Jean-François Richet (Assault on Precinct 13) knows how to use both its air and its jungle setting for risky actions, whereby in addition to the main character, some of the onboard crew and the 14 air travelers got their moments of glory. Don’t get me wrong: Plane is still a real action film by Gerard Butler, but thanks to small adjustments he rises from the crowd of mediocrity.
What makes Gerard Butler’s Plane such a good action thriller
You can’t accuse Plane of being unpredictable, but nobody expects that from the film, which is designed for 107 minutes of exciting entertainment. The fast pace of storytelling Vibe of 90’s blockbusters such as Con Air and the justified FSK 16 approval do not allow boredom to arise and comfort over many an action cliché.
Especially the Airplane (crash) scenes captivate with their high level of tension. Plane is probably not a film that will ever run in the inflight program of a commercial plane, but when Gerard Butler tries to save the plane and its passengers from certain death, the action film shows this actually so often seen disaster successfully nerve-wracking .

Plane: Gerard Butler’s latest prank
Also stands out in the second half of Plane rousing fistfight in a warehouse where Gerard Butler’s strongly staged confrontation is reminiscent of the ingenious physical action of the John Wick series. A detour to WOW * should definitely be worthwhile for this.
On top of that, you can still guess what the planned sequel to Plane should be called – right: Ship.
