Setback for the summer – “iron nights” with minus temperatures this weekend

After a month that was very dry, now comes the next challenge for the Swedish farms, the frosty “iron nights”.
– It’s chilly June weather in the north, and extremely dry in the south, says TV4’s meteorologist Ulrika Elvgren.

Iron nights is the term for a period when the frost hits in spring or early summer, when the crops have started, and the temperatures during the day have started to rise.

– Plants can be damaged by the frost, or even have delayed development. Frost at this time of year is not good, says TV4 meteorologist Ulrika Elvgren.

During the previous night, apart from northern Sweden, many measuring stations in southern Sweden reached below zero.

– It is, among other things, out on Gotland, coastal Kalmar, the inner parts of Småland and up in Östergötland, says Ulrika Elvgren.

The frost hits – even tonight

The iron nights usually occur at different times, in different parts of the country. At the beginning of June, it is above all southern and central Sweden that is affected, in July they can strike in the northern part of the country.

And tonight, the temperature is expected to fall below zero again, in several parts of the country.

– It’s roughly the same areas that can be affected by frost, including Västergötland, the inner parts of Svealand and up above Norrland.

– Things are turning around now, but the iron nights seem to remain in the northern parts of the country. It’s chilly June weather in the north, and extremely dry in the south, says Ulrika Elvgren.
