New Spider Man movie brings back nearly forgotten MCU villain starring

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the sequel to the hit Spider-Man: A New Universe, hits German cinemas today. While the animated multiverse outing boasts the same visual playfulness as its predecessor, Marvel fans in particular will also get a few unexpected guest appearances like a villain who’s been missing for 6 years celebrate. We’ll tell you how you know him. But of course that means from here on: Attention, it will follow massive spoilers!

Spider-Man Reunion: Who Is the Captive Prowler in Across the Spider-Verse?

In the first Spider-Verse film five years ago, Miles Morales’ uncle Aaron turned out to be the supervillain Prowler and died in his nephew’s arms. But in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Miles, as the title suggests, travels through the multiverse. And that means there are not only alternate realities with other spider heroes, but also other prowlers and one of them is Aaron Davis (Donald Glover) – with a live-action cameo in the animation adventure.

In a cage at the Spider headquarters of the Parallel Dimension Guardians, Donald Glover’s villain sits with little to do but make an amazing guest appearance. Even if MCU fans only get a glimpse of him for a few seconds twice, they should be able to tell him from his Appearance in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017).

There he became petty criminal car thief saved by Tom Holland’s Spider-Man from other criminals he was trying to buy guns from. Aaron Davis later revealed the whereabouts of Toomes/Vulture (Michael Keaton). Although the MCU portrayed him as a rising potential Prowler back then, we didn’t see him again after that – until now, albeit when he’s already done his villain (never seen) streak and has been imprisoned. (By the way, Aaron Davis is Miles Morales’ uncle in the comics, which is why he also mentions his nephew in Homecoming.)

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has even more guest appearances in store

Donald Glovers Aaron Davis aka Prowler is not the only acquaintance in the latest Spider-Man film. Wother references to non-animated Marvel films can be found in Across the Spider-Verse: Right at the beginning, for example, the name of Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) is mentioned, who caused a multiverse chaos in another Spider-Man parallel world – we are of course talking about the events of Spider-Verse Man: No Way Home.

It will also be concrete with Live-action flashbacks to Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguiredepicting the plight of other spider-fighters over the dying bodies of Captain Stacey (Denis Leary) and Uncle Ben (Cliff Robertson) from The Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man.

Another Spider-Man reunion after No Way Home: Tobey Maguire & Andrew Garfield

An additional surprising, “real” reunion in the Spider-Verse also provides the Asian shopkeeper from Venomwho last met Tom Hardy in Venom: Let There Be Carnage: Mrs. Chen (Peggy Lu).

Add to that the myriad of Spider-Man comic book and video game surprises, and Across the Spider-Verse is a cameo-seeker’s feast that’s not just for animated film fans to see.
