While Our Flag Means Death started a year ago on HBO Max in the USA, was celebrated there and received a 2nd season order, we had to wait over a year (14 months!) for the streaming start of the hyped series wait. But now season 1 is here with the funniest pirate pack since Pirates of the Caribbean.

At the center of Our Flag Means Death is Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby), a noble landowner who, in a midlife crisis in 1717, decides to become a pirate. Because he doesn’t like the side effects of violence, murder and looting at work, he wants to become a “gentleman’s pirate” who travels the seas in a colorful wardrobe (Jack Sparrow would be jealous!). Already in episode 1 he tries to clarify disputes on deck with words, has his crew, who are always on the verge of mutiny, sew creative pirate flags with a cat motif and captures potted plants when hijacking fishing boats.
What follows is one Screamingly funny series with unexpected twists, which will not let you go back to where you boarded the ship of the “Revenge” at the beginning. How far does the story go with the real template by the gentleman pirate Stede Bonnet is an exciting research rabbit hole that you (e.g. on Wikipedia) have to explore yourself.

What Our Flag Means Death has in common with Pirates of the Caribbean, besides the adventure-comedy mix and an oddball captain, is also that Crew full of lovable and memorable characters: Be it (suitable for the Pride month of June) queer pirates, a woman in male disguise, seagull lovers (Ewen Bremner) or a whiner who constantly boasts about having once served under the dreaded Blackbeard.

Blackbeard is initially just a name that reminds us of Pirates of the Caribbean 4 gets with Thor 3 and 4 director Taika Waititi but soon also a face. if his tough guy from a pirate meets Stede’s gentleman captain, the series reaches its climax. The humor of New Zealand coffin creator Taika Waititi, which relies on the absurd, clearly runs through Our Flag Means Death, even if he “only” supported creator David Jenkins as executive producer, director and actor.
The ten 30-minute episodes Season 1 Our Flag Means Death is over way too soon and after that (while waiting for Season 2) you’ll definitely want another Pirates of the Caribbean rewatch. Pirate Word of Honour.
