Accidents with electric scooters are increasing sharply

The popularity of electric scooters can also be seen in the accident statistics. In 2022, 3,334 people were injured in accidents involving electric scooters, which is an increase of 35 percent in one year, according to figures from the Swedish Transport Agency. Four of the accidents resulted in deaths.

Many of those who have accidents are young people and the vast majority of incidents take place in larger cities.

“The ease of availability and the increased private ownership of electric scooters also means that we see that more children and young people are involved in accidents. Almost every fourth injured person is under the age of 18,” says Staffan Berge, statistician at the Swedish Transport Agency, in a press release.

According to Staffan Berge, it mainly concerns single-vehicle accidents where the driver himself loses control of the electric scooter.
